Strange rules in Baseball: Manager Conduct After Ejection

Rule 4.07 of the Major League Baseball Handbook States:

4.07 When a manager, player, coach or trainer is ejected from a game, he shall leave the field immediately and take no further part in that game. He shall remain in the club house or change to street clothes and either leave the park or take a seat in the grandstand well removed from the vicinity of his team’s bench or bullpen.
Rule 4.07 Comment: If a manager, coach or player is under suspension he may not be in the dugout or press box during the course of a game.

After the manager is ejected for what ever reason he has to leave the field and not be further involved in the coaching of his team.  He needs to remove himself from the dug out and either leave the stadium but he is allowed to sit with the crowd and watch the game!

Bobby Cox arguing with umpire

Bobby Cox

Let’s say a manager is ejected.  Let’s pick one at random, let’s say, Bobby Cox.

He can change into his street clothes and sit among the fans and watch the rest of the game!

I wish someone one would actually do this.  It’s allowed by the rules of Major League Baseball and it would simply be a really cool moment to see the manager supporting his team despite getting ejected!

Matt Garza No Hitter!

Matt Garza no hitter for Rays

Matt Garza robbed by fellow Tampa Bay Rays After His no Hitter

Matt Garza of the Tampa Bay Rays pitches the first no hitter in franchise history!  Garza faced off against the Detroit Tigers and was actually locked in a no-hitter duel with Tigers’ starter Max Scherzer  into the 6th inning, until Scherzer gave up a grand slam as his first hit!.

Garza’s no hitter is unusual in because this is the first time a pitcher has put away all 27 batters without being credited with a perfect game.  After giving up a walk in the 2nd inning, the next batter hit into a double play.

Garza throws the 5th no hitter this year in Major League Baseball.  Check back at MLBoddities for more Matt Garza no hitter coverage including our exclusive out-by-out photo expose.

Unusual Baseball Rules: The 12 Second Rule

According to the Major League Baseball Rulebook section 8.04:

8.04
When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call “Ball.” The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball.
The intent of this rule is to avoid unnecessary delays. The umpire shall insist that the catcher return the ball promptly to the pitcher, and that the pitcher take his position on the rubber promptly. Obvious delay by the pitcher should instantly be penalized by the umpire.

If a pitcher doesn’t make a pitch 12 seconds after he obtains possession of the ball and the batter steps into the batter’s box, the umpire can call a ball.  If the pitcher still hasn’t delivered the ball after 48 seconds, my guess is he is awarded a walk.

Mariners Fight in Dugout

Seattle mariners fight in the dugout

The effects of a frustrating season may just have just reached the boiling point when a fight erupted in the Mariner’s dugout last night.

A ball was hit to M’s outfielder Michael Saunders in the bottom of the fifth.  It went all the way to the wall, and delivered what many consider to have been a lazy throw to second base.

Chone Figgins made no attempt to make a play on the ball which squirted all the way to across the diamond for an error.

Figgins was later taken out of the game by manager Dan Wakamatsu.
